Welcome to Prepositions! – What are prepositions? – Words like ‘on’ and ‘under’ that connect nouns/pronouns to the sentence. – They show relationships – They tell us where or when something is in relation to something else. – Examples: on, in, by – ‘On the table’, ‘by the tree’, ‘with a friend’ – Use them in sentences – Let’s place prepositions in our own sentences! | This slide introduces the concept of prepositions to third-grade students. Prepositions are important parts of speech that show the relationship between nouns or pronouns and other elements within a sentence. They can indicate time, place, direction, and more. Use simple and familiar examples to illustrate how prepositions function. Encourage students to think of prepositions as ‘relationship words’ that help to connect ideas in a sentence. During the lesson, provide opportunities for students to identify and use prepositions in example sentences and in their own writing.
Where is the Cat? Understanding Prepositions – Prepositions show location – Words like ‘on’, ‘in’, and ‘under’ tell us where something is – Examples: on, in, under – ‘The cat is on the box’, ‘The cat is in the box’, ‘The cat is under the box’ – Activity: Find the preposition – Look at pictures and sentences, find where the cat is – Point out prepositions in sentences – ‘The cat is beside the box.’ – ‘beside’ is the preposition | This slide introduces the concept of prepositions to third-grade students by using a familiar and engaging scenario: locating a cat in relation to a box. Prepositions are words that show the position of one thing in relation to another. The activity involves students identifying the preposition in given sentences. For the activity, provide sentences with clear prepositions and corresponding images if possible. Encourage students to explain why they chose a particular preposition. This interactive approach helps solidify their understanding of prepositions in a fun and memorable way. As an extension, students can create their own sentences using prepositions to describe the location of objects in the classroom.
Prepositions in Our Classroom – Explore our classroom – Find objects and their positions – Look for above, below, next to, between – Make sentences with prepositions – Use ‘on’, ‘under’, ‘beside’, ‘among’ in sentences – Share your preposition sentences | This slide is designed to engage students in a practical activity to identify prepositions by observing their surroundings. Encourage the students to walk around the classroom and spot various objects and their positions relative to other items. Prompt them to use prepositions such as ‘above’, ‘below’, ‘next to’, and ‘between’ to describe the location of these objects. Then, have them construct sentences using these prepositions. For example, ‘The clock is above the door’ or ‘The pencil is next to the notebook’. This activity will help solidify their understanding of prepositions in a fun and interactive way. Prepare to facilitate the activity by guiding students and providing examples if they struggle to form sentences. Plan to allow students to share their sentences with the class to build confidence and reinforce learning.
Prepositions Are Everywhere! – Prepositions aren’t just for place – They also show time and movement – Examples: ‘before class’, ‘after school’ – ‘Before class’ tells us when something happens – ‘Through the park’ shows movement – Imagine walking ‘through the park’ to get somewhere | This slide introduces the concept that prepositions are versatile words used to link nouns, pronouns, or phrases to other words within a sentence. They are not only used to describe the location of something but also to express time and movement. Use everyday scenarios to help students understand how prepositions function. For example, ‘before class’ indicates a time, ‘after school’ refers to a time following an event, and ‘through the park’ describes the path of movement. Encourage students to think of other examples and to notice prepositions in their daily conversations and reading.
Let’s Practice Prepositions! – Complete the sentences with prepositions – ‘The dog jumped ___ the fence’ – What word fits to show where the dog jumped? – ‘Meet you ___ the library ___ 3 PM’ – Think about where and when you’ll meet – Share your answers in class | This slide is an interactive class activity designed to help students practice using prepositions in sentences. Encourage the students to think about the position and time to fill in the blanks with appropriate prepositions. For example, ‘over’ might fit for the first sentence, and ‘at’ and ‘at’ for the second. After they have filled in the blanks, ask them to share their answers with the class. This will help reinforce their understanding of prepositions and how they are used to describe the relationship between different elements in a sentence. Provide guidance and correct any mistakes to ensure they grasp the concept.
Class Activity: Preposition Treasure Hunt – Find objects using preposition clues – Look ‘under’ the rug or ‘behind’ the curtain – Pair up for a treasure map adventure – Teamwork makes the treasure hunt fun! – Use prepositions to guide your search – ‘Next to’ the bookshelf or ‘above’ the desk? – Share discoveries with the class – Discuss how prepositions led you to each object | This interactive activity is designed to help students understand and identify prepositions by using them in a real-world context. Set up the classroom with various objects placed in locations that can be described using prepositions. Provide clues that use prepositions to guide students to each object. Students will work in pairs to interpret the clues and find the objects, filling in their treasure maps as they go. After the hunt, facilitate a discussion where students share how they used the preposition clues to find the objects. This will reinforce their understanding of prepositions and how they are used to describe the location of objects. Prepare a list of prepositions and example clues beforehand, and ensure that the activity is organized in a way that every pair has a chance to participate fully.
Preposition Power! – Congratulations on learning prepositions! – Prepositions link ideas together – Words like ‘in’, ‘on’, and ‘at’ show relationships – They make our sentences clear – ‘The cat is on the table’ shows where the cat is – Keep practicing to master prepositions! | This slide wraps up the lesson on prepositions, celebrating the students’ effort and understanding. Emphasize the role of prepositions in connecting ideas and clarifying the meaning of sentences. Reinforce the concept by reminding them that prepositions often indicate location, time, or direction. Encourage them to continue practicing by identifying prepositions in their reading or by creating sentences using different prepositions. Offer praise for their hard work and encourage the mindset that with practice, they will become proficient in using prepositions effectively in their writing and speech.
